Goal Type:

Boston Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

No accomplishments yet. Just started running since last week. Still getting used to all the pounding from running.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I hope to qualify for Boston Marathon in about two years time. Not sure if I can make it by 2010, but that would be sweet if I could.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Don't have a long term plan yet. I need to see how I respond to training.

Personal:

30 years old, male, IT consultant. Just started training for marathon. Don't listen to music while running. I bike on weekends. Like to hang out under the sun, moon & stars. Planning on learning swimming sometime soon. Then my weekends would be perfect, run, bike & swim!  Have managed to cut smoking to 3.5 smokes a day.

And so it begins! My first run in a long long time. Ran with poor shoes. Have a lot of sore muscles and bones. This hurts...

This was nice! I wanted to run 2 miles on my first run but barely managed 1.6. So this felt really nice. Although I was running at granny pace :(

Took me 42 mins at about 12 minutes/mile. Going easy for now till I get used to all the pounding from running. Got meself brand spanking new Asics 2140. Feels nice. No muscular pains. Right knee hurts a little. This will keep me from running for atleast a few day. Hope to be fit by Thursday. Was planning to go for 3 miles. Ended up with 3.6. I'll take that. Would have been better without the joint pain :)

Welcome to the blog! Congratulations on having the determination to get out and run in spite of the smoking addiction.

Smoking is a serious hit on lung capacity. Once I helped a neighbor pass an army fitness who was a smoker. When we started, he could barely get through a mile in 16 minutes. He had to walk a good portion of it. When he quit smoking he was able to run 2 miles at 9:00 pace in a matter of three months, and he passed the test.

So the first step towards a Boston Qualifier would most definitely be to quit smoking completely and leave it behind you. We have a few former smokers on the blog that can help with advice.

Vj, yup, quit smoking about 9 months ago. Best thing I've done. I smoked for over 20 years, so you can imagine how hard it was.

Now, my passion is running. I started slow & with very, very low mileage. So, just take it easy.

First you need to take the decision to stop smoking.

Sasha, can put together a nice beginner's plan for you so that someday, you could BQ!

Wish you only the best!

Oh, hi Eric. You must've heard someone talking about you behind your back. :)

I have very very good hearing! ;)

The plan would be very simple. Run 6 days a week the most you can so that you are able to feel as good 24 hours later as when you started. Increase as you become fit. Do not skip days. Keep the pace easy, do not force it. Once in a while race a 5 K or do a time trial on a reliable course.

Sasha, Eric, Jona, Burt, thanks all for your support n guidance. I am trying to take it easy. Will soon do a time trial for 5K. Can't wait for it!

Was hoping to get in some easy run today. But my knees are a lil sore from Sunday's run. So I just walked for a while for 1:47 hrs. Hope my knee gets better by Thursday when I am planning to run b/w 3.5-5.0 miles.

Hi Vj, and welcome to the blog. Good luck with your running! And don't worry too much about the "pounding." Your body is made for this. Just stick in a little walk break when you need to and you'll be amazed at the progress.
